The tempera paint is not pushed into the painting surface as with other paints, but rather built up in layers that dry quickly so each succeeding coat does not disturb the previous layers.

Egg tempera in applied in thin glazes laid on top of each other until the desired color, saturation and shadows are achieved. Egg tempera dries quickly and cannot be blended once applied.

Building layers allows to achieve luminosity, which is one of the main characteristics of egg tempera painting. This short course will demonstrate how to achieve this effect.
