This painting is based on an early 15th century icon from Novgorod, Russia (public domain image) and is one of the most famous icons in Russia. According to legend, there was a terrible dragon living in a lake in Libya. Being pagans, local people worshipped the dragon and appeased him by giving him virgins. Inevitably, the lot fell to the king’s daughter.
Saint George appeared on a white horse, and “In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit” charged the dragon and struck him with his lance, while his horse trampled on him.
Size 8x10 inches, egg tempera on wood, framed. Wired and ready to hang.
